History

In 1988, longtime Turtle Lake residents Dave Sorenson and Diane Coppens became concerned about environmental issues facing area lakes. Sorenson, a wildlife biologist, and Coppens, a marketing professional, invited Turtle Lake property owners together to talk about how to best protect the water and shoreline of Turtle Lake. Property owners decided to form a lake association, and so TLA was born. Dave became the first President and Diane the first Secretary/Treasurer.

Turtle Lake Association became a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in 1997. Obtaining nonprofit status has allowed TLA to apply for and receive grants, to accept charitable giving to help stock the lake, and to employ experts on a regular basis to monitor the lake. Turtle Lake Association is proactive in sharing information with other organizations, and members of TLA serve on lake, water, and shoreline boards across Itasca County.
